My attention was drawn on Twitter to a review in just three words of Rosemary Sutcliff’s The Eagle of the Ninth:
Courageous. Resolute. Gripping.
This set me wondering how other readers and followers here, as well as on Twitter and Facebook, would review The Eagle of the Ninth in just three words.Twelve responses so far…more in the comments below would be very welcome please!
Thank you.

‘Ancient imagery imagined’…
I owe much to Ms. Sutcliff and her brilliant life’s work. She has made me what I am today…an ‘archaeologist’ into the times of the Ancients and their lives. Her fabulous book on the ‘lost’ legion transfixed me as a child as I read my way through her misty histories of lost time. Her words were like a web winding their way around me and ensnaring me forever in their ancient world. I have never looked back.
Ms. Sutcliff I believe was a genius knowing how the written word can give entrance into long lost eras which could only be invoked through imagination and relentless research. Her skill and insight in bringing that eight to life is exceptional.
I thank her for instilling in me the reverence for the past tnrough her writing as well as the love of books and reading. And I think she also turned me into an rabid Anglophile!…;-)…and on the hunt for more of her great books!
